2018

On the night of October 13, 2018, Anita Akapson, a 31 year-old who moved back to Abuja from the UK, was gunned down by DSP Inagozie Godwin inside her car. The unfortunate events happened in the Katampe District of Abuja and Anita Akapson later died that same night at Gwarimpa Hospital from her injuries.

The police claimed that they thought she was an armed robber. Yet, family and friends claim otherwise. Anita Akapson was a few blocks away from her home. After a verbal altercation with a policeman, according to the family, she was “trailed, targeted, intercepted and blocked” by four persons, before one of the occupants who revealed to be DSP Inagozie Godwin shot at her rear tyre and shot her at close range.

Anita Akapson’s memory is not as defenceless as the myriad of people the police kill every year. She was the daughter of the former Minister of Finance, Nenadi Usman who pressed charges and pressured the police to run a thorough investigation. DSP Inagozie Godwin was arraigned in court in November 2018 but pleaded not guilty. The outcome of the trial is unknown.
