Nnamdi Okwuyasi
2002
Nnamdi was the first child of his family. He was well respected by everyone in the neighborhood. On the day he was killed, his friend who had been in the neighborhood for a dental appointment stopped by at his place to visit. They hadn’t seen each other in a while, and so they caught up that day and discussed for a long time. When his friend announced he would be heading back home, Nnamdi decided he would go with him. An opportunity to hang out with the family and his friend, Keji, particularly. They had all gone to the same secondary school.
Once there, they had a great evening of laughter and banter, and when it was time for Nnamdi to go back home, Moraks offered to drive him off as he was headed towards the Ikoyi axis as well.
It was on the way that they were both gunned down by the police.
“Nnamdi was well respected by everyone,” his brother’s friend recalls.
Even though the murder received wide coverage, with news agencies all over the country carrying the news, and the then governor of Lagos State, Bola Ahmed Tinubu paying the families a visit to condole with them and promise them justice, no one has been held accountable to date. The police force claims they have not been able to find the killer-policeman.
