Abuja

On July 4, 2018, Linda Angela Nkechi Igwetu was killed in Abuja by Inspector Benjamin Peters, a Nigerian policeman. She closed from work at 11pm in Abuja, and joined her friends for a little celebration. An air of jubilation bubbled around her for two reasons: she was finally done with the National Youth Service Corp, a one-year mandatory service Nigeria graduates must undertake; she was also retained by her employer, Outsource Global Company, where she had done her service. In Nigeria, where unemployment is high, it was a big deal. The Passing Out Parade where she would be awarded her NYSC certificate was taking place the next day.

For she and her friends, this was their last day wearing the National Youth Service Corp uniform. A night of merriness, excitement, and potential, quickly turned to gloom and death. On her way back home with her friends, around 3 a.m., they were stopped by members of the Nigerian Police at a checkpoint after Ceddi Plaza. The car had a rooftop through which Linda screamed her joy and happiness into the Abuja night. As they left the checkpoint, one of the policemen on duty, Benjamin Peters shot at the car. That bullet hit Linda at the midriff, and she began to lose blood immediately. Benjamin Peters said he thought Linda was being kidnapped when he heard shouting and jubilating amidst loud music.

Linda was rushed to Garki Hospital but was not treated by the doctors because there was no police report. This was despite the presence of police officers
